Aubergine 3 and Open Air Bar Offer Global Fusion

"Aubergine 3"" will be returning to Open Air in the East Village Tuesday, at 10 PM. This time, though, it's all live. We will be augmenting our live dance music sound with two wonderful musicians. DC's up-and-coming soul chanteuse Angeli Murthy will be joining us for an evening of east-meets-west vocal improv, while the talented guitarist - and Open Air's host of NYC's favorite chillout party, Saffron Soul - K. Ravi will be bending notes and minds with his electro-ambient guitar wizardry. K Ravi has studied both Karnatak and Hindustani Indian music which he melds with Western rock, jazz, funk and electronica and we are quite looking forward to his and Angeli's sonic offerings.
Sounds Good! Check It out!

Guitarist and Songwriter Elliot Smith Dies

Musician Elliot Smith was found dead in his apartment in Los Angles yesterday. The cause of death according to the Los Angeles Corner's Office was a self-inflicted stab wound. Although not a jazz musician Elliot Smith deserves mention on Gothamjazz because he was a great guitarist and songwriter who blazed an influential creative path during the '90's.
Smith wrote and produced five critically acclaimed albums, "Roman Candle" (1994), "Elliott Smith" (1995), "Either/Or" (1997), "XO" (1998) and "Figure 8" (2000). He worked on the sound track for Gus Van Zant's film 'Good Will Hunting" (1997), which brought further mainstream exposure and appreciation. His work is highly thoughtful and sophisticated, while maintaining an honest and raw feel. Smith elevated the singer/song writer idiom with his strong arrangements, bittersweet rusty voice and unusual guitar phrasing and melodies. Like Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake, Elliot Smith made an impressionable mark on music and then left too early.

This Friday at Jazz Gallery: Liberty Ellman Quartet

Guitarist Liberty Ellman celebrates the release of his album "Tactiles" from Pi Records. Ellman has played with such avant greats as Henry Threadgill and Butch Morris and is one of NYC's most creative guitarists. Ellman is accompanied by Mark Shim on tenor saxophone, Brad Jones on bass, and Derrek Phillips on drums.
Jazz Gallery Set Info
"Ellman has an understanted somewhat detached approach to his instrument yet his single note lines are not devoid of of sensuality and his spooky chording never short of a question or three. The result is absorbing, challenging music from a guitarist who, like his peers Jeff Parker and Ben Monder, is keen on avoiding cliche."

No Neck Blues Band Tomorrow Night at Tonic
Check out this description of the No Neck Blues Band.
Black Crowes meets Harry Partch in Willie Winant's backyard barbeque - which is something us NY'rs have yet to witness as they only really cut loose when far from whatever they may deem 'home' (West Harlem). what you get is what you see and what you see is a circle of glue. Smell these men and be glad it ain't '66 - a dose will "do" (Tonic)
