"Overall, the depth and power of Cangiano's woeful, soulful voice brought the nostalgic of Tango to life." - Brooklyn Press
"MARIA is a major mezzo-contralto voice " - Charles Handelman, opera reviewer
MARIA CANGIANO has a unique voice within a new generation of Argentine musicians in New York. Her musical journey mirrors her gypsy life: Daughter of Italian immigrants from Middle Eastern roots with a Neapolitan opera singer grandfather, raised in Argentina and exposed to Tango and South American folk music, came to the US and discovered Jazz, Blues and Afro music. After performing Opera, she started a new artistic journey interpreting Tango music as well as experimenting her own fusion style of Latin American Folk music, Flamenco, Jazz and Pop. Maria has performed in New York major venues, such as Nuyorican Poets Café, Bowery Poetry Club, Cornelia Street Café and Joe's Pub, among others. She has shared the stage with very well known international artists, such as Nestor Torres, Jaime Torres, Raul Jaurena, Tito Castro, etc
In MY SOUTH, Maria creates her own South American fusion with old and new tangos - from her new recording of Astor Piazzolla's revisited songs- and her own original compositions based on a selection of Jorge Luis Borges' poetry with a diversity of musical rhythms from Flamenco, Candombe to Argentine Folk-Tango and Pop music. The songs have been composed and arranged in collaboration with Julio Santillan and Martin Balik.
