| Description: | Medicine Wheel is a project led by bassist/composer Ben Allison that features Ted Nash (saxophones), Michael Blake (saxophones), Tomas Ulrich (cello), Ben Allison (bass), Jeff Ballard (percussion), Frank Kimbrough (prepared piano), and Ron Horton (trumpet). Originally conceived of as a suite in five parts, it was commissioned by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust 1995 Commissioning Program and performed at a Jazz Composers Collective concert on 11 April 1996, in New York City. The project's debut CD, entitled Medicine Wheel, was released on the Palmetto Records label in April, 1998. The recording was made possible through an additional grant from the Cary Trust. The groups second CD, Third Eye (also on Palmetto), was released in June, 1999. Ara Dinkjian appears on Oud and Cumbus on this latest CD. |
