| Description: | As the Artistic Director of the Jazz Composers Collective, Ben has produced or co-produced over 100 concerts and special events including the Collective's annual concert series (now in its eleventh season). His recordings as a leader include Riding the Nuclear Tiger (2001), Third Eye (1999), and Medicine Wheel (1998) on Palmetto Records, and his 1996 debut Seven Arrows on the Koch Jazz label. His latest disc, Peace Pipe (Palmetto, September 2002), was named one of the best recordings of 2002 by The New York Times, Jazz Times, Coda (Canada), and Jazz Review (UK), among others, and enjoyed a seven-week run at #1 on the College Music Journal (CMJ) radio charts, remaining in the "Top 10" for 18 straight weeks. Downbeat magazine's 2002 Critics Poll recognized Ben in the TDWR (Talent Deserving Wider Recognition) categories for "Best Bassist" and "Jazz Artist of the Year." He is currently collaborating with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies, writing music for his new play, Two Days, which will make its debut at the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven in the spring.
