| Description: | Frank co-leads the Herbie Nichols Project, (with Ben Allison) which was premiered by the Collective in 1994. The group's latest CD, Strange City (Palmetto), features previously unrecorded Nichols compositions, and follows Dr. Cyclop's Dream and Love Is Proximity (both on Soul Note). The project has received grants from the Mid Atlantic Foundation for the Arts, the Aaron Copland Fund, and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and has toured the world over. Downbeat's 2002 Critics Poll recognized the Herbie Nichols Project in the "Acoustic Jazz Group of the Year" and "Album of the Year" categories. His recent CD releases include The Willow and Saturn's Child - duo recordings with vibraphonist Joe Locke - and Noumena (Palmetto), a live recording from the Collective's concert series. He can also be heard on recordings by Ben Allison, Michael Blake, Ted Nash, Kendra Shank, and the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. Frank has been busy writing new music for his upcoming recording for Palmetto Records. Visit his web site at www.frankkimbrough.com |
