| Description: | The Herbie Nichols Project is a working, performing, and researching entity, premiered by the Jazz Composers Collective in 1992, dedicated to the music of the great pianist-composer. Frank Kimbrough (co-leader of the project along with Ben Alison) began transcribing Herbie Nichols' music in 1985 from the Blue Note and Bethlehem recordings of Nichols' piano trio. The Herbie Nichols Project debuted larger-ensemble interpretations of this music to sold-out audiences in 1994, using 12 musicians in 16 different musical configurations. In the current ensemble (a standard jazz quintet), Nichols' music lives with a fresh angle. By realizing the music for horns (Nichols' only recordings were made in a trio setting), the quintet guides the music in new directions. The Project has been awarded funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the Aaron Copland Fund, and continues to receive invitations to perform worldwide, sharing the timeless creative and musical vision of Herbie Nichols with an ever-growing audience. |
